El doctor Harris, un viejo amigo de Tom y de su mujer, aparece entre el grupo de supervivientes y se ofrece para ayudar a los jóvenes que están subyugados. Tiene una teoría y quiere ponerla en práctica, pero para eso necesita un "conejillo de Indias", Ben, el hijo de Tom, al que intentarán rescatar del sometimiento de las máquinas y deslizantes. Por otra parte, el grupo intentará que Pope se integre y le ofrecen un trabajo en la cocina.
